Renewing your licence—in person

To renew your licence in person, you can visit a transport and motoring customer service centre.

If you are renewing your learner, provisional or open licence, check your driver licence renewal notice to see if you can do this online.

If you live in a remote area, you may be able to renew your licence by mail.

What to bring with you

You will need to:

You no longer have to complete a driver licence application form when visiting a Department of Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre.

You will still need to complete a driver licence application form (F3000) at police stations and most QGAP offices.

You may need to have your photo taken when you renew your licence.

A new licence will be sent to you by standard mail when you have successfully completed your licence renewal. If you have signed up for e-reminders we will email you when your licence is posted and will send you a reminder when it's due to be renewed next time.

Renewing an expired licence

You must not drive if your licence has expired.

You can renew your licence within 5 years of its expiry date. If your licence expired more than 2 years ago, you won’t be able to use your driver licence as proof of identity. You will need to bring 3 evidence of identity documents.

If your licence expired 5 or more years ago, you cannot renew your licence. You will need to apply for a learner licence. However, you are able to apply for a class of licence you previously held as a returning driver.

Photo requirements

When you apply for a driver licence, photo identification card, marine licence indicator or industry authority in Queensland you may need to have your photo taken.

If a photo is required, you will need to remove glasses, sunglasses or any headwear and must maintain a neutral expression. If you wear headwear for religious reasons it must be adjusted so that all of your facial features from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead are clearly shown.
